Medic dies of heart attack responding to call

BENSALEM, Pa. - March 8, 2010

Bensalem paramedic Daniel McIntosh responded to a call of a suicidal man out on the 2600 block of Knights Road. When he and his partner arrived, the young man fled on foot.

McIntosh chased him but didn't get very far. He suffered a massive heart attack and died on the scene.

"This is just a sad day and a freak accident which is what happened," said Fred Harran, Bensalem Director of Public Safety.

Outside the Bensalem Emergency Medical Services building, black bunting was hung on the front facade. And the American flag was lowered to half-staff.

McIntosh was a 13 year veteran of Bensalem EMS and also a part-time police officer and a volunteer firefighter.

"He was full of life. He was a great guy. It was heaven on Earth working with him. He was just always smiling, always laughing, always just a real good guy to work with," said colleague Michael Gloden.

The 39-year-old McIntosh leaves behind a wife and 2 young daughters, ages 1 and 6.

Chad Pradelli did speak to the troubled young man involved in the ordeal. He said he did try to commit suicide by ingesting 2 dozen penicillian pills and that prompted his mother to call 911. He said he is extremely sorry and his condolences go out to the McIntosh family.
