Rash of Main Line armed robberies

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - March 9, 2010 Violent crime is almost unheard of in Bryn Mawr, Montgomery County, one of the wealthiest zip codes in the country. But four armed robberies in recent months have a lot of people wondering what's going on in what they once considered a very safe Main Line community.

According to police, just minutes before closing Monday night, a masked gunman jumped over the counter at Rosemont Pharmacy yelling, "Nobody gets hurt if you cooperate. I just want the drugs."

With that he cleaned out the store's supply of powerful narcotics.

A week and a half ago, three armed men ransacked the Bryn Mawr News Agency. The store owner and his wife found themselves staring down the barrel of a gun, as the bandits scooped up cash, cigarettes and candy. And nearby residents are also scared.

Late last year there were two gunpoint robberies on Thomas Avenue.

Three young men were robbed by a lone gunman just off Lancaster Avenue in October.

In December a man was robbed at gunpoint at Thomas and Reese after three men threw something at his car.

All four armed robberies happened in one small area of Bryn Mawr within a half mile of each other. But, the police say they appear to be unrelated.

What's behind the outburst of violent robberies is a mystery. Police are going over video trying to identify the heavily disguised suspects. And it's not crime imported from the big city. Police suspect most of the suspects may be locals.
