Parenting Perspective: Building blocks of the future

March 10, 2010

For instance, they teach children how to balance things and build a structure that won't fall down - although kids can get special pleasure out of building a tall tower and then watching it fall with a loud crash... the louder the better unfortunately.

Yet when I watch my son play with Lego blocks, I sometimes imagine I'm getting a glimpse of his future.

Maybe he will become an architect and build tall skyscrapers. Or perhaps a painter or an artist who uses his hands to create something beautiful. I find my imagination is working almost as hard as his is.

When a child is given blocks, they can turn them into anything. Whether it's a home, or a castle... perhaps a fortress or a planet - even a vehicle.

Experts say blocks are the perfect toys to inspire co-ed play. Unlike Barbies or trucks, blocks are unisex, allowing boys and girls to play together.

Creativity has no limit and while my son's bedroom floor can at any time have hundreds of Lego pieces scattered around, I remind myself that each piece is perhaps a window into his imagination and possibly his future.
