Philly Spring Cleanup just one month away

PHILADELPHIA - March 10, 2010

The event, part of the Great American Cleanup, will be held on April 10th. The theme of this year's cleanup is "Keep Up the Sweep Up," encouraging residents and organizations to sustain the effort toward a cleaner and brighter Philadelphia.

"We can have a cleaner city, we deserve a cleaner city and with your help and support we'lll be able to do that," said Mayor Nutter.

Nutter was in the 2500 block of East Gordon Street, which was the winner of last year's Philadelphia More Beautiful Clean Block Award.

Block captain Kathy Berry has worked tirelessly since moving here in 2002 to transform this once desolate neighborhood into one of the nicest streets in the city.

Only six other families live on this block and, until their clean-up, more than a dozen other houses were boarded up.

The house next door to Kathy was gutted by fire, but you wouldn't know it from the outside, because she and the other residents spruced it up, put blinds in the window and a white bench outside.

Volunteer to help

To volunteer to help with the cleanup, just register for one of the specific cleanup sites, which are located around the city, and go at that location on April 10th.

When you register online, you will be given the opportunity to choose a site from either the map or the drop down menu. You will receive a confirmation email after you register that will remind you of your site location.
