Flood forces NJ couple to canoe from home

EASTAMPTON, N.J. - March 15, 2010

In Eastampton, New Jersey, Action News caught up with one family dealing with major flooding from the Rancocas Creek.

Bill Rhodes and his girlfriend haven't been out of their house since Saturday.

"I can't get my truck out of here, I have no running water, I have no septic," he said. His house on West Millcreek Road is still surrounded by water, and the only way to get in and out is by canoe.

Bill said he didn't leave over the weekend because his girlfriend, Mel, wouldn't abandon their five animals.

"She wouldn't leave because there are five animals in the house. She wasn't going to leave them, and I'm not going to leave her," he said.

"We've been through floods before, but none like this," Bill continued.

Bill said he does have a generator in the house, and he said there's enough power to heat up food in the microwave.

The county is in the process of buying up homes in the flood-prone area to turn it into a park.
