12-year-old raises thousands for charity

AMBLER, Pa. - March 15, 2010

The energetic 12-year-old spent Monday morning distributing thousands of dollars of food and toiletries to the needy on behalf of the "Feed the Children" anti-hunger organization.

Brooke's parents say her charitable streak started during her 6th birthday party when she received a lot of presents and started asking questions.

"I shouldn't have gotten all these presents, what should we do with these things?' So, the idea was born to have a car wash, to not get so many presents for her birthday and instead, somehow give back," said Brooke's mother, Jill.

Those annual fund-raising car washes have become so popular that, last year, they were able to raise $3000.

That's enough money to fill a tractor trailer with care packages. So, the folks from "Feed the Children" asked Brooke if she'd like to personally hand out the fruits of her labor.

On Monday morning, with a little help from a local church group, her friends, and the Mattie Dixon Community Cupboard in Ambler, Brooke was able to give out those boxes full of supplies to hundreds of under privileged families.

"I knew from very early on that I was lucky, lots of kids didn't have what I had. Kids all over the world, they deserve a little bit more," said Brooke.

Brooke's selflessness is certainly influencing her friends.

"You don't, in your daily life, stop and think 'How can I help humanity today?' So, I'm glad she's doing this and giving us an event that's fun and that we can help at the same time," said 13-year-old Nicole Reasert.
