Correctional officers injured in attack by inmate

SMYRNA, Del. (AP) - March 17, 2010

Delaware Department of Correction spokesman John Painter says that one of the guards was stabbed by an inmate Tuesday night, while the second was believed to have been punched in the head.

The officer who was stabbed was flown to Christiana Hospital in Newark, while the second was taken to Kent General Hospital in Dover. No identities or specific conditions were released for either officer.

Painter says the inmate responsible for the attack at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center was in custody Tuesday night and that the facility was placed on lockdown.

Painter did not say where in the prison the attack happened or what kind of weapon was used.
