2 dead after car plunges in NJ bay

March 17, 2010

Seaside Park police say they received 911 calls reporting what sounded like an explosion around midnight.

Police say they arrived on the scene to see the taillights of a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am sinking into about 8 feet of water.

Divers pulled the 41-year-old driver, Sharon Stankard of Manchester, and 47-year-old Ralph Wetmore Jr. of Toms River from the water. They were pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police are trying to determine why the vehicle went into the water.
