Large NJ brush fire placed under control

BARNEGAT, N.J. - March 22, 2010

That's the word from police in Barnegat, where a fire has consumed about 540 acres.

While there is still a lot of smoke in the area, police say they expect the fire to be out sometime on Monday.

No injuries have been reported in the blaze, which started Saturday afternoon in the Ocean County community.

The fire produced heavy smoke that forced officials to briefly evacuate the homes of about 60 people.

State Forest Fire Service Warden Bert Plante says the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
