Source: Man killed trying to extinguish Olney fire

OLNEY - March 23, 2010

The blaze broke out on Tuesday morning at about 4:40, in a two-story twin on the 600 block of Elkins Avenue.

When firefighters arrived they found two people on the roof and heavy fire coming from the first floor of the home. Crews were able to rescue the two victims, who told firefighters that they were awoken by the smoke detector, but couldn't get out of the building because of the fire on the first floor.

A 60-year-old man was found dead on the first floor. Sources tell Action News that the man was trying to put the fire out with a garden hose when he became trapped in the home.

The fire department was able to get the fire under control in about 15 minutes.

The fire marshal is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
