Hearing held on AC Expressway toll hike

HAMMONTON, N.J. - March 23, 2010

Apparently, lots of drivers get of here at Route 50 in Hamilton Township to avoid the Egg Harbor toll a half-mile away. The authority says soon you'll have to pay at one spot or the other, but not both as some drivers feared.

"Either pay a toll getting off at 17 or, if you choose to stay on the Expressway, you'll pay a toll at the Egg Harbor Plaza. You will absolutely not be paying a double toll," said Sharon Gordon of the South Jersey Transportation Authority.

Expressway officials held a sparsely attended hearing at the Farley Service Plaza on Tuesday. Lauren Dagostino of Mays Landing was concerned about the cost to local residents.

"I'm probably going to continue to use the routes I'm using now to avoid the toll," she said.

Expressway officials say that locals will get special frequent user discounts which could be more than a dollar off the toll.

By the time the upgraded Interchange 17 opens all tolls will be collected EZ Pass.

66% of Expressway drivers use EZ pass, and the Transportation Authority is investigating ways to collect tolls from those who don't.

Interchange 17 will link the Atlantic City expressway with Route 50 in Hamilton Township, New Jersey.

It should be completed by May.
