Franklin Institute: new exhibits feature electricity, weather

CENTER CITY - March 23, 2010 The new Electricity exhibit continues the work of Ben Franklin. The demonstrations show how our everyday devices, like cell phones, emit electricity.

"What we really want people to do is to feel electricity and to understand how integral a part of their lives electricity is," explained Derrick Pitts.

Other stations in the exhibit ask visitors to take stock in how much electricity we use in our daily lives, and how much we should be using and show how the human body, can produce energy of its own.

Another new, companion exhibit is Changing Earth.

It shows how earthquakes, sea level change, erosion, and fluctuations in climate, have been morphing the planet well before we humans ever arrived and will continue to do so well after we leave.

6abc partnered with the Franklin to set up a weather forecasting booth. Visitors will get a sense of what it is like giving the forecast, and how the images behind you end up appearing on TV.

"Young kids, adults, people who are just barely interested in electricity or changing Earth and those who are deeply interested in the most important concepts. We have something for everybody," Pitts said.

Both the Changing Earth and Electricity exhibits open at the Franklin Institute on Saturday March 27th. For ticketing information click here.
