Veterinarian Rachel Lee testified Thursday that dogs suffered a variety of illnesses at the Almost Heaven Kennel outside Allentown because Derbe Eckhart failed to provide them with adequate care.
Jurors viewed photos as Lee explained the ailments she encountered on a pair of raids on Eckhart's property that prosecutors say turned up hundreds of animals living in filthy conditions.
Eckhart faces animal cruelty stemming from a 2008 raid in which authorities seized dozens of dogs. He's also accused of continuing to operate a kennel after the state ordered him to shut down.
Defense attorney Jeff Conrad says Eckhart is a victim of publicity-seeking animal-welfare officials.
