Phila. officer charged in crash that injured trooper

PHILADELPHIA - March 25, 2010

Matthew Sharkey, 23, was charged this week with aggravated assault while DUI and related charges.

Those charges were filed after Sharkey checked himself into a 30 day rehab center.

Action News is awaiting word from Philadelphia Police on the status of Sharkey's position in the department.

The accident happened around 3:30 a.m. on February 20th along I-95 at Girard Avenue.

Trooper Matthew Sheeran's cruiser was struck from behind, pinning Sheeran between it and another car.

According to police, Sheeran and his partner had stopped to investigate an abandoned car blocking the right lane.

As a tow truck tried to remove it, they remained to secure the scene, setting out flares and keeping their lights flashing.

Despite all that warning, police say, a car driven by Sharkey, with 4 other passengers inside, crashed into the cruiser.
