Man with gun robs Rite Aid of OxyContin twice

WYNNEFILED HEIGHTS - March 25, 2010

Police say the man captured in surveillance video is armed, dangerous, and has a serious need for OxyContin, a highly addictive opiate, that has often led to criminal behavior in addicts to steal more.

Back on February 22, police say he walked into the Rite Aid in the 5000 block of City Avenue wearing a blue Wawa worker's jacket.

"He gives a pharmacist a demand note which says, 'Place all your OxyContin in this bag, no one will get hurt. I have a gun,'" Lt. Johnny Walker of the Philadelphia Police said.

The pharmacist handed over all the OxyContin with a retail value of $3,000.

On Wednesday night, he struck again at the same Rite Aid and demanded all the OxyContin on hand, but this time, he warned the pharmacist he meant business.

"He produces a gun in this particular occurrence and tells them there's three other people in the store that also have guns, and 'don't do anything stupid,''" Walker said.

This time, the male ran off with $7,000 worth of the drug with a street value of about $15,000.

Police believe he works alone.

He is described as a white male with a heavy beard, in his early 20's, and appears to be a little bit heavy set.

"He's pretty concentrated in this particular pharmacy for some reason, so we're thinking he lives in that area, but as we all know, City Line Avenue, there's a bunch of stores in that area and he can move over to the other side in Lower Merion," Walker said.

Police say the suspect with a gun and possibly on drugs makes him particularly dangerous and unpredictable. They fear someone could get hurt and they want to get him off the streets. If you think you may know who the man is and/or his whereabouts, you're being asked to call police.
