Going to the movies? Bring more money

NEW YORK - March 26, 2010

Starting Friday, moviegoers can expect to pay, on average, $1.50 more per ticket in theaters owned by Regal Entertainment, AMC Entertainment, and Cinemark Holdings.

The price hike for 3D movies may be even higher than that. The exact price increase will vary from theater to theater.

"When you look at Avatar generating those kinds of box office results, there's an opportunity to gain more of it by increasing prices," said Peter Gruber, Chairman and CEO of Mandalay Entertainment.

In 2009, ticket sales set a blockbuster record, with revenue surpassing $10 billion in domestic sales for the first time ever. 3D movies were responsible for 11% of those sales, a 9% increase from 2008.
