Accused online date scammer faces federal charges

PHILADELPHIA - March 26, 2010

It is now a federal case with new charges filed in Philadelphia federal court Friday afternoon.

His victims knew him as Jay Singh, and that's how his name was first reported when he faced charges filed by Philadelphia police.

Authorities now say his real name is Jaitass Dhanoa. "Don Juan Dhanoa" is more like it according to police. They say he trolled the internet for rich young women and seduced them. Police say he then racked up charges on credit cards that he opened using the identities of at least three local women that he dated.

Philadelphia police originally charged him in three cases, but three more victims have come forward.

Federal authorities have now taken over the case based on the extent of the alleged fraud and Dhanoa's international travels.

He was tripped up earlier this week when he returned to the U.S. and contacted one of his alleged victims. He didn't know she was on to him and she called the police.

Officers were waiting when Dhanoa showed up at the woman's Rittenhouse Square condo bearing flowers and a birthday cake.

"He just walked in with a big bouquet of flowers and a big cake," said Sgt. Cynthia Kelly of the Philadelphia Police. "We were standing there with a shiny pair of handcuffs."

Now he's sitting in federal prison. That's where he'll stay if the government has its way.

Dhanoa had numerous fake I.D.'s when he was arrested, including something he may have tried to pass off as a U.S. Passport.

Dhanoa has a bail hearing next Tuesday. The government will argue he's a risk of flight and should stay in jail as they continue this growing investigation that could reach around the world.
