However, Suzanne Thurman, executive director of Delaware's nonprofit marine mammal stranding network, says it's hard to tell whether that was the same whale that later washed ashore.
Thurman says the pilot noticed something unusual about the ship as he prepared to board and the crew found a whale stuck on the bow of the ship. Thurman says the whale later sunk below the surface.
Thurman of the Marine Education, Research & Rehabilitation Institute Inc. in Nassau says the 61-foot whale was the biggest the institute has had to deal with.
