EXCLUSIVE: Man saves abused puppies

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - March 29, 2010 Will McMonigle went to a house in North Philadelphia to buy a white puppy he had seen a picture of. He was appalled by what he found.

"He was given to me in a box with a blanket over him and as soon as I picked him up and he was totally limp and he was bleeding profusely from the nose."

The 5-week-old puppy had a fractured skull. There were three other puppies with the injured one, all of them living in deplorable conditions. The house had holes in the walls and there were bugs and trash everywhere.

McMonigle says he couldn't bear to think of the puppies living there. So he took them all, including the injured one he named "Irish".

"I took all the money out of my pocket which was $300 I put it on the table and I walked out with all four dogs."

Will took Irish to the Steinbach Veterinary clinic in Blue Bell. The veterinarian says, at best, he has a 50-50 chance.

"33 years and I've never seen a fracture this bad."

Dr. Jonathan King can only speculate about how Irish was injured. Whether he was stepped on, or hit with something, the result is the same, a massive fracture. Dr. King says it will be touch and go for the next three months.

"What we're going to try and do is let Mother Nature heal him. We're going to keep the swelling down and keep the brain damage down and let Mother Nature do it's thing," Dr. King explained.

The best case scenerio is that the skull tissue knits itself together.

"And the dog will have a hump and that's it and will be fine," he further said.

The PSPCA will be working with Will to identify the house the puppies came from. They want to make sure no other dogs are at risk and will likely file animal cruelty charges.

Will's family now has four puppies instead of one. He says it's been a financial strain, but he couldn't turn his back and leave the others behind.

"Look at him he's a little baby could you imagine having his head cracked open?"
