Assault on girl linked to previous attacks

PHILADELPHIA - March 31, 2010

The incidents began in late February, and the latest involved an attack on a 12-year old girl Tuesday night.

Police say a man broke into a home through a dining room window around 10:00 p.m. and went into the girl's room while she was in bed.

The girl woke up to find the unknown man standing over her, police say. The girl told officers she felt the man punch her, but didn't know what happened before that. The girl screamed, alerting her mother. The attacker punched the girl several more times in the face. She bit her attacker's finger, and he fled.

That attack fits a pattern that's broken out in an area known as Castor Gardens. On March 7th, police say there was an attack on a 22-year-old woman who was asleep on a couch around 1:00 a.m. in the 1400 block of Lardner when she woke up to find the man fondling himself. The victim ran out the door to a neighbor's house, and police say the man fled.

That attack also fits the description of the man wanted in connection with an assault on Levick Street back on February 28, 2010. In that case a 10-year-old girl awoke to an unknown man indecently assaulting her.

Her 74-year-old babysitter was able to fend off the intruder. That man entered the home, police say, by breaking in through the back door.

The suspect is described as a black man in his late teens or early 20's. He was six feet tall with a thin build and he had freckles, acne scars or spots on his face.

Police say residents of the Castor Gardens section of Northeast Philadelphia should be on high alert. Anyone with information should call 911 or (215) 686-TIPS.
