NJ has low response to census

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - March 31, 2010

Census Bureau director Robert Groves says the response rate is low in the state's urban areas. Only 27 percent of Newark residents have mailed in their forms and 33 percent of Elizabeth residents have complied.

Groves says about half the country has already answered the forms.

The ten questions help determine the distribution of funding for schools and roads. They also determine the number of seats states have in the House of Representatives.

Census takers will visit households that fail to return forms starting in May.
