Prayer flash mob wants violence stopped

CENTER CITY - April 1. 2010

At Dilworth Plaza, several dozen teens and church leaders gathered to pray and protest.

Recently, Center City and South Street have been the scenes of violent flash mobs with Mayor Nutter calling it a knucklehead crisis.

The teens summoned by pastors, today, called themselves a prayer flash mob. They were looking for an end to the violence that has tarnished Philadelphia's image.

Reverend Mike Major, the chief organizer of the event, is the pastor at Zion Baptist Church, one of the city's most historic churches.

"The whole goal of today was to present and help the city see that there are some positive kids in our city and secondly, they will be seen as part of the solution and not just part of the problem." Major said.

The still new district attorney Seth Williams was drawn to the prayer flash mob to offer encouragement to the Christian youth.

"I'm glad to be here today to support you for doing what's right," Williams said.

Organizers say the turnout for this first time event may be small, but their message is strong and positive and they plan many more like it in the weeks ahead.
