Even fire chiefs have to pay up

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) - April 7, 2010

A Southern California fire official racked up $26,000 in fines for running tolls in Orange County.

Newport Beach Fire Division Chief Paul Matheis says he thought he didn't have to pay tolls while driving a department SUV.

City officials say only emergency vehicles on department business are exempt.

Matheis had been driving his department SUV to and from work.

He says he's settled the fines.

City officials are investigating whether he should receive a reprimand as well.
