Girl killed by hit-and-run driver identified

CHELTENHAM TWP., Pa. - April 8, 2010

Tanicha Workman was hit around 10:00 p.m. on Cheltenham Avenue and Oak Lane Road in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County.

Officials say a van hit the 17-year-old girl and then took off. Witnesses say a white car following the van also hit the teen, and the driver of that car did not stop.

Workman died at the scene. She lived just a block away from where the accident happened and was with her 12-year-old brother, Ryan. She had been working at a Burger King earlier in the afternoon, and when she got home she took Ryan to the Cedarbrook Mall to buy him a game. He witnessed the accident.

"I heard my son screaming and that's when I came down. I thought they were playing," said Tanicha's mother, Karen Garnett. "That's when he ran in the house and said she got hit by the car."

"She was my baby. Someone just left her in the street," said her father, Derek Workman.

Cheltenham Township police tell Action News they are looking for a Chevy or GMC work van, either silver or grey in color. They believe the vehicle involved in the accident will have extensive front end damage. It was last seen heading west on Cheltenham Avenue toward Old York Road.

Police managed to follow a trail of leaking fluid to the Lynnewood Gardens area about a mile away, but did not find it.

Witnesses told police that the driver was a middle-aged white or Hispanic man.

Garnett made a heartfelt plea to the driver.

"Just please, come forward and set your mind free," Garnett said. "Just come forward and say you made a mistake."
