Cleanup ordered at NJ religious dump

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (AP) - April 8, 2010

The Environmental Protection Department is permitting the burial of the religious artifacts even though it ordered the site in Lakewood cleaned up last week.

Orthodox Jews are not permitted to discard the items, called Shaimos, by normal means.

Residents complained after Rabbi Chaim Abadi organized the drop-off site on the wooded property off Vermont Avenue during Passover.

The DEP issued a warning April 1 for operating an illegal solid waste facility.

The rabbi is expected to discuss options with DEP officials next week.
