Couple steals Easter Seals donations

DREXEL HILL, Pa. - April 9, 2010

Apparently, a couple who had their eyes set on a donation jar in Delaware County.

Investigators say the man and woman behind the theft believed they carefully planned out the crime, though they probably didn't count on police having such clear pictures to help track them down.

Surveillance video shows the couple strolling into the Drexel Hill CVS at 4:00 p.m. Sunday.

"These scumbags robbed that money," Upper Darby police superintendent Michael Chitwood said.

The stolen jar held from $50 to $100 in a Easter Seals' donation.

Chitwood says the video shows the woman speaking to the man with the man's back to the counter. She then walks out of frame. The man reaches back and grabs the jar off the front counter and leaves.

"It appears the female distracts employees so the male can take the donation jar," Chitwood said.

About 10 seconds later, the video shows the woman casually crosses into frame again to pick up a bag she had previously left near where the donation jar had been and exits.

"The money jar was there for a good cause, a good reason, trying to raise money for the less fortunate , people come along and take it for no good reason; I think it's absolutely appalling," customer Mark Mooney said.

"Just the fact that it's Easter Seals money, that's really sad. I wouldn't have expected that," Julie Gayle of Lansdowne said.

While the theft of one donation jar won't disrupt programs, the reaction of Carl Webster, the CEO of the local Easter Seals, was sadness.

"Organizations like ours survive through the generosity of the people in the community and often that is a dollar at a time," Webster said.

Chitwood puts it bluntly when he asks for the public's help.

"We're looking for the public's help to take these two bums off the street, period," he said.
