Driver gets 7-14 years in fatal crash after Phils game

PHILADELPHIA - April 13, 2010

Twenty-year-old Joseph Genovese was sentenced Tuesday. He faced a maximum of 13½ to 27 years in prison in the crash that killed a St. Louis teacher and seriously injured another.

Authorities said Genovese ran a red light while intoxicated and struck teacher Cindy Grassi of St. Louis and Sandra Wacker outside a Phillies-Cardinals game at Citizens Bank Park in July 2008.

Grassi died in the crash and Wacker suffered a brain injury and broken leg.

Genovese pleaded guilty in February to homicide by vehicle, homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence and aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence.

In court, the prosecutor called Genovese a "ticking time bomb with a smart mouth and no compassion."

Genovese told the judge he has nightmares about the crash, and is "truly sorry." In court his family also expressed sorrow, but had nothing to say as they left court, pushing news cameras out of the way.

Genovese had a long juvenile record. He was arrested seven times in the 21 months prior to the fatal crash. After being arrested he posted his mug shot on his MySpace page.

On the night of the crash, the prosecutor said, Genovese casually asked an officer he knew: "So, what's going to happen next? Is my insurance going to go up?"

Assistant District Attorney Beth McCafferty said "I can't imagine a more abominable, a more irreverent, a more insensitive statement to make."

Outside court, Grassi's family thanked law enforcement and medical personnel, the Phillies and the people of the Philadelphia area.

"Hopefully this day may bring some closure to us as a family," said sister B.J. Heineck.
