Rapist loose after attack in Trenton garage

TRENTON, N.J. - April 13, 2010

It happened around 5:30 p.m. Friday in the garage on Yard Avenue downtown, just a block away from the Trenton train station.

The victim, a state employee who works nearby, was headed to her car on Level 4 when she was attacked.

The assault ended when the victim spotted a co-worker walking by the car and began to scream and bang on the window. He chased the suspect but couldn't catch him.

Officers say the suspect was caught on surveillance camera. He's described as a black male, 5'7" tall with a medium build and brown eyes. He was wearing jeans, a dark shirt and white jacket. Police say he appears to walk with a limp.

"For someone to do this at 5:30 in the evening... that's a sick mind, someone that is dangerous and we need to identify him, locate him and take him off the streets," said Capt. Joe Juniak of the Trenton Police.

Now women who use the garage are trying to protect themselves.

"Got myself some pepper spray because I'm scared to death to walk in the parking lot," said Phyllis Severino. "I mean it's very scary."

Nexus Parking Systems, which operates the seven level garage, says it has added a 24 hour per day security guard and increased video surveillance.

"We just recently put in 16 new cameras in the garage. We're also adding additional cameras throughout the levels of the garage," said Michael Ciesielka of Nexus Parking Systems.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call Trenton Police at 609 989-3663.
