Pa. man arrested for putting cameras in bathrooms

LANSDALE, Pa. - April 14, 2010

Matthew D. Hawkins, 33, of the 1300 block of Reiff Road in Lansdale is charged with six counts of invasion of privacy.

The investigation began on February 15th when police were called to a business in the 1300 block of Society Drive in New Castle County after a hidden camera was found in an office bathroom.

Police say the camera was positioned in front of the toilet, and was disguised with a box that was the same color as the wall.

Two days prior, police say, the office manager gave the camera to a computer service technician, identified as Hawkins, who allegedly indicated he examined the device and found no images.

However, county detectives say they recovered the camera and conducted a forensic examination which revealed hundreds of deleted images. Some of the images captured Hawkins as he installed the camera on the ceiling above the toilet in a different restroom.

Police later learned Hawkins had also placed a hidden camera in multiple other restrooms in Philadelphia area hospitals.

On April 6th, police went to Hawkins' Lansdale home and recovered his computer and several other electronic devices. Investigators say additional charges are pending further examination of the seized computer equipment.
