Police fire at suspect with high-powered rifle

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - April 15, 2010

Through the early morning hours police at East Detectives questioned two suspects and a handful of witnesses. One of the suspects was armed with a handgun. A second suspect was armed with a high-powered rifle, equipped with a scope. Police say when he raised that rifle one of the undercover officers fired a shot.

"The officers just happened to come upon these two individuals," said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Around 2:00 a.m. two plain clothes police officers from the 26th District were returning from the end of their shift when police say they came upon two armed men at 2nd and Somerset Streets in North Philadelphia.

Chief Inspector Small explained what happened next: "When these plain clothes officers saw, specifically the male with the rifle in his hand, both officers got out [of their vehicle] - ordered the males to drop the gun. One male threw a handgun underneath his vehicle. The male with the rifle raised the rifle up, so the officer discharged his weapon one time."

No one was injured in the incident.

Police then took both suspects into custody. Now they're trying to figure out what the armed men did or may have intended to do.
