City installs panhandling meters

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) - April 15, 2010

New meters are going up in downtown Santa Cruz, California.

But they're not for parking -- they're for panhandlers.

The 1950s parking meters are painted red.

They'll be used to collect money for the homeless and pay for things like bus fare and official state I-D cards.

The city council voted unanimously this week to install up to eight of the vintage meters.

Council members hope the meters will discourage panhandling.

City officials expect the red meters to collect about $1,700 a year.
