"This appears to be what I would consider a typical hoarding situation," George Bengal of the PSPCA told Action News.
Specifically, the situation is 60 cats and one dog living inside a Holmesburg home. We're told two women, who are sisters in their 30s, live there in conditions which were unfit for animals and humans both.
"We found urine, feces on the floor," said Gregory Jordan, a Humane Society Police Officer.
The discovery of so many animals comes as no surprise to neighbors who have complained of a powerful odor lingering around the property.
"I can't open windows, I can't open doors," said Barbara Clark. "I have to put on an air conditioner to get any air."
"I know this place smells a little bit so I wasn't surprised," said Tom Holtji.
Then there's the health of the animals. Officials with the PSPCA say many of them appear to be sick, with upper respiratory problems, fleas, and malnourishment. The lone dog has a severe skin condition which could be mange.
"I think the ladies thought they were doing good service," Bengal added, "but they couldn't keep up with the care of the animals."
Bengal says the women could face over 60 cruelty to animal charges. Meanwhile the animals are all here at the PSPCA being examined by vets.
