Car chased by police hits pole, driver dead

CAMDEN, N.J. - April 16, 2010

Investigators tell Action News a Camden, N.J. police officer tried to stop a car, a green 1996 Mercury, around 4:07 a.m. However, the driver refused to stop and took off.

A chase followed and the vehicle hit a parked car in the 1200 block of Sycamore Street, but kept going.

As the chase progressed on Haddon Avenue, the pursuing officer said the passenger could be seen throwing items out of the window. What those items were, however, is still under investigation.

The pursuit continued to the intersection of Haddon and Copewood Avenue, where the driver lost control and slammed into a telephone pole.

That driver was pronounced dead at the scene. No identity has been released.

A passenger in the car was taken to Cooper University Hospital in critical condition.

Officers say the chase only lasted a few blocks and was not a prolonged pursuit.

The entire incident is under investigation by Camden Police.
