Chester police probe string of home invasions

DATELINE CHESTER, Pa. - April 16, 2010

Investigators say there have been four incidents since February. While arrests are pending in two of them, Police are still searching for the culprits in two other incidents.

The most recent invasion happened Tuesday afternoon in broad daylight in the 100 block of West Elkington. At least 1 man brandishing a handgun, with his face shielded by a hoodie, caught a 29-year-old resident home alone upstairs. Then, the suspect tied him up, and robbed him of cash, computers, cameras and 2 cellphones.

The culprit remains at large.

Nearby, in the 200 block of West 23rd, 2 gunmen struck the night of April 8th. They shot and wounded a mother and son.

After that incident, the 2 suspects -- both juveniles, one of them from Philadelphia -- were arrested at the scene when police responded quickly to the gunfire. The victims are still struggling to recover.

There was another home invasion on April 5th in this section of town. Action News is not going to show the house, but at 9 p.m. on April 5th, 3 masked men stormed through, unlocked the door and pistol whipped the owner. But they could not get his giant screen TV out of the door. They remain at large.

A fourth home invasion in mid-February became a murder on West 3rd Street. Forty-nine-year-old Charles Johnson was shot to death in his house. Police are on the verge of charging 2 males in that case. One of the suspects is a juvenile. Police believe the motive was robbery.

Chester's police do not believe any of these 4 home invasions are related, but they are devoting full resources toward solving the 2 outstanding cases. They are also warning residents to stay on high alert and keep their doors and windows locked.
