There are lots of quick choices, but which ones are the most nutritional? Action News has partnered with Good Housekeeping and has some answers.
Breakfast sandwiches and cereals are the fastest ways to get a good breakfast on the go, but a lot of them contain too much fat and lots of sugar.
With assistance from Good Housekeeping, we found the best breakfast sandwiches and cereal for your mornings. Adults who eat 3 servings of whole grains daily, tend to carry around less fat; that's according to a recent study at Tufts University. The best way to consume healthy whole grains is by eating cereal.
"Whole grains pump up digestive hormones and increase insulin sensitivity so that you may end up storing less fat," says Toni Hope, the Good Housekeeping Health Director. "In fact, people who eat a lot of whole grains tend to have 5% less belly fat."
But a downside to many cereals is excess sugar. Still, there are plenty of good cereal choices, if you take time to check the label.
"Don't be fooled by something on the front of the box that might say 'Made with whole grains' or 'A good source of whole grains.' You want to see that whole grains is the first item in the ingredient list," Hope says. "Don't just look for whole grains though, you also want to make sure that there are no more than six grams of sugar."
The popularity of breakfast sandwiches is on the rise, because they are also so quick and easy. One of the healthiest examples is Good Housekeeping's recipe for the morning Monte Cristo: Start with two whole wheat waffles, three slices of honey baked deli ham on the bottom waffle, and one ounce of reduced fat Swiss cheese. Put it in the oven to melt the cheese, then drizzle just a teaspoon of light syrup on top.
There's also a healthier version of a traditional bagel and lox sandwich. Use a whole wheat mini bagel, spread with reduced fat cream cheese, then just add lox, tomato & onion slices.
Plus, there's the banana-wich breakfast sandwich: A whole wheat hot dog bun with one tablespoon of natural peanut butter spread on top. Then place one banana that's been sliced inside like a hot dog. Over that you can drizzle a half teaspoon of honey for just an extra touch of sweetness.
Then there's eggs-in-a-wrap: A whole wheat wrap with an ounce of goat cheese, and one scrambled egg with a cup of baby spinach.
All the sandwiches are just 325 calories or less! It's proof that a quick and easy breakfast can be tasty and nutritious.
