Man killed in standoff with police

HAMMONTON, N.J. - April 26, 2010

Police say the man, identified as 27-year-old Donald Hoffman, was fatally shot by a member of the Atlantic County Emergency Response Team shortly after 4:00 Monday morning.

Police say it all started about 4:30 yesterday afternoon when the suspect pulled a gun on an EMS worker at the Emergency Services building next to the Deptford Police station in the Deptford Municipal Complex.

When police responded to the scene, they say Hoffman jumped into a white Honda Civic and sped off.

The pursuit went through Gloucester County to the Atlantic County home of the man's mother on 13th Street in Hammonton.

That's where police sayHoffman, still armed, jumped out of the vehicle and ran into the home on Fairview Avenue in Hammonton.

Shortly after Hoffman entered the house, his mother and several others who were inside the home walked out unharmed.

A police negotiator communicated with Hoffman throughout the night in an attempt to get him to surrender peacefully. After negotiations failed, canisters of pepper spray were fired into the house. However, Hoffman continued to ignore commands to leave the building.

Authorities say Hoffman was shot as members of the Atlantic County Emergency Response Team entered the house to arrest him.

Police are not releasing details because of the ongoing investigation centered on the shooting.
