North Penn teachers back in class today

TOWAMENCIN TWP., Pa. - April 27, 2010

They still have no contract agreement with the school board in Montgomery County's largest school district, which has roughly 13,000 students. That means the two sides are likely to return to court Wednesday.

State law required the strike to end Wednesday so students could get in the mandatory 180 days of instruction by June 30th.

Teachers and the school board still can't agree on wages. The union accepted pay raises proposed in non-binding arbitration. The school board rejected the wage increases claiming they would cause a hike in property taxes that would be too large.

The union wants a judge to order both sides back to the bargaining table.

If there's no deal, it's possible the North Penn teachers could go on strike again in the fall.
