Alligators found in Philadelphia warehouse

HOLMESBURG - April 28, 2010

The discovery was made Wednesday morning in the 8100 block of State Road.

A total of two alligators, about three to four feet long, were found.

Experts say the animals were in 300 gallon tanks, and wouldn't have grown much bigger.

The gators were found during a police narcotics raid in a small industrial complex.

One officer climbed up onto a tank and found the gators inside.

The man the cops were looking for wasn't there.

But, they did find a gun along with the gators.

The nine suspects are accused of smuggling cocaine between Philadelphia and Texas and then distributing it to York and West Chester.

The narcotics officers are undercover and weren't able to talk on camera. However, the one who found the gators says it was a shock, and that he'd never seen anything like it.

The alligators were removed by the Pennsylvania SPCA.

A veteran investigator on the scene says alligators in Philadelphia are more common than most people think.

"You wouldn't think, but they're a common pet. People are really getting into them," said Susan Sojourner. "You can go to any kind of reptile show and purchase them for five or six dollars."

It is illegal to own alligators in Philadelphia.
