Man arrested for 2009 blow-dart attacks

BEAR, Del. - April 28, 2010

Hamilton Smith, 20, of Bear, Delaware, was arrested back in February. However, the state police say they did not announce the arrest until now because they were worried about compromising other active leads in the investigation.

Smith has been charged in two attacks on August 11th on Route 7 in Wilmington. One was at Ocheltree Lane, the other at Vincent Drive.

At the time of the attacks, Action News spoke to victim Katie Shannon, a school teacher. She called state police reporting she was shot in the back with a blow dart as she rode her bike along Ocheltree Lane.

"A truck passes and I get this sting in my back, and it hurt enough for me to be like, 'Ow!'" Shannon said.

Thinking it was debris from the road, she kept going until a friend she was riding with noticed the dart in her back.

Smith was formally charged with two counts of Assault and two counts of Conspiracy. He is free on bail awaiting trial in Superior Court.

A second suspect is being sought.

Anyone who may have information about this case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.
