Police: Suspect shot, killed in attempted robbery

GERMANTOWN - April 29, 2010

It happened around 9:40 a.m. Thursday at a Family Dollar Store in the 5200 block of Germantown Avenue.

A Garda armored car was parked outside, and police say the suspect followed a guard from the armored car and into the store. He grabbed the guard by the neck and tried to take the money, police said.

"The male came in and tried to rob the guard inside the store, a struggle ensued, and the guard fired four times, shooting the male," said Capt. Winton Singletary of the Philadelphia Police. Singletary went on to say the suspect did not have a gun.

The man was transported to Albert Einstein Medical Center in extremely critical condition and died around 11:00 a.m.

The man has not been identified, but witnesses say he lived in the neighborhood.

Len Brown has a newsstand nearby. He says the suspect lived across the street and may have been mentally challenged.

"I saw him circle the truck and went behind the guy that carried the bag," Brown said. "Three minutes later bang, bang bang."

The guard was uninjured. There were two employees inside the Family Dollar at the time who were also unharmed.
