Vehicles damaged by fleeing suspect in West Mount Airy

WEST MOUNT AIRY - April 29, 2010

The incident began around 11:30 a.m. when police were called out to the report of a domestic dispute with a 59-year-old man breaking windows.

Investigators say, when officers arrived on the scene, the man got into his Ford SUV and ran over an officer's foot.

He then put the SUV in reverse, police say, and tried to run over another officer and that officer discharged his weapon, grazing the man. However, the wound didn't stop him.

The man then drove off, hitting seven vehicles including a UPS truck and police vehicles.

Police say that he stopped on the 500 block of Horter Street when they used a TASER on him and then used mace on him before finally taking him into custody.

One witness, Barrington Brown, says the man was yelling for police to leave him alone.

"They started tasing him, and he was still on the accelerator, pushing the car to get away," Brown said.

The officer is getting X-rays on his foot.

The suspect is in good condition at Einstein Medical Center. Police won't be charging him until he is out of the hospital, and that's when his name should be released.

The suspect will face numerous charges including aggravated assault. Investigators say he had a restraining order against him.
