2-year-old injured in hit and run

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - May 5, 2010

The hit and run took place along the 2900 block of west Oakdale Street shortly after 4:00 p.m..

Police say the 2-year-old boy was exiting a car with his mother across the street from his home. That's when, police say, the boy darted out and a burgundy or maroon minivan struck the child.

Witnesses say the driver then hit a moving car and a parked car, before running a stop sign in an effort to get away.

One neighbor told Action News there was no way the driver didn't know he or she hit someone.

"No doubt about it. She knew, you could hear a thump, she never slowed down, she kept accelerating until the little boy came out, like I'm just going to mow over whatever it is," witness Maurice James said.

The child was rushed by medics to St Christopher's Hospital For Children, where he was listed in stable condition with a broken rib and bumps and scrapes. Police believe the minivan, possibly a Dodge Caravan, bears a partial PA tag of H-M-C.

There are conflicting reports on whether the driver was male or female, but one witness tells Action News he saw several children in the striking minivan.

Authorities are hopeful there are people out there who can lead them to the driver who was last seen turning on 27th Street.

Anyone with tips is asked to call police; all information will be kept confidential.
