It happened at 12:16 p.m. Thursday in the Bustleton section.
Investigators say an 82-year-old woman and her husband had just returned home from grocery shopping and had pulled into their driveway in the 9700 block of Chapelcroft Street.
The man got out of the car, police said, and began to unload bags from the back. His wife was still in the driver's seat and, somehow, the car went into reverse.
The 78-year-old man was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators say they do not expect to file charges.
