Winds bring down trees, power lines

PHILADELPHIA - May 9, 2010

The Action Cam was in the 2900 block of Frankford Avenue in Philadelphia's Kensington section where a check cashing store awning blew down off of a store and wrapped around a street pole approximately 15 feet in the air.

In North Philadelphia high winds caused a scaffolding to collapsed overnight in the 1400 block of North Cadwallader Street.

Authorities tell Action News that the scaffolding was three stories tall and was being utilized to do some work to a neighboring unmarked commercial building when high winds knocked down a cinder block wall. When the wall fell, it knocked over the scaffolding into the neighboring apartment building around midnight. The scaffolding fell onto the apartment building and blocked a rear door of an apartment where two females lived. The scaffolding also blocked the females' windows, which prevented them from exiting the apartment.

Firefighters and police were called to the building along with inspectors from L and I.

Then, around 5:00 Sunday morning in the 6700 block of Anderson Street in West Oak Lane, a large tree fell across the street bringing down utility wires and knocking out power to a 6-block area from where the tree fell.

About a block away, large tree branches were brought down wires in the 600 block of Vernon Street.

Utility crews have been working to restore power in the Delaware Valley since yesterday's high winds arrived.
