ACLU says PA State Police citing people for using swear words

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - May 13, 2010

Lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union are filing a series of free-speech lawsuits against the Pennsylvania State Police.

The suits claim state troopers have been wrongly charging hundreds of people with disorderly conduct for swearing.

The ACLU says it combed through nearly 800 citations issued by Pennsylvania state police in a recent one-year span and found most of them involve profanities and other legal, nonobscene speech.

A state police spokeswoman says the agency has no immediate response to the lawsuits.
