Christie vetoes tax on millionaires

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - May 20, 2010

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has vetoed a measure to restore a higher income tax on those making more than $1 million.

Christie acted Thursday evening within minutes of the bill's final passage by the Legislature.

The Republican governor made good on his promise to veto any law that increases taxes.

Christie said he would not repeat the "failed, irresponsible and unsustainable fiscal policies of the past by raising taxes on the highest taxes people in the nation."

The surcharge on those making more than $1 million would have raised the income tax from 8.9 to 10.8 percent on about 16,000 residents.

The bill passed both houses of the Legislature along party lines, with Democrats in favor.
