Police: Man terrorizes Home Depot with hatchet

WILMINGTON, Del. - May 14, 2010

Andre Walker, 45, of Bear, Delaware was arrested after the Thursday night incident.

Police say Walker went into the Home Depot in the Miller Road Shopping Center in Wilmington around 8:00 p.m.

He took a bucket and a hatchet from a store display, police said, and brought the items to a register in the Garden Center. Police say that's when Walker grabbed the hatchet and the female clerk by the shirt, demanding cash.

Walker then allegedly started smashing the cash register with the hatchet until it opened, then grabbed the cash inside and fled the store.

In the parking lot, police say Walker got into the passenger's side seat of a car while the driver was still inside. However, Walker then got out of the car and started walking back toward the store where he was confronted by a manager. Police say Walker then started swinging the hatchet at the manager.

Walker then fled the scene, and police spotted him along the 500 block of West 37th Street, still holding the hatchet. He allegedly resisted arrest and an officer used a Taser in order to take him into custody.

He is charged with robbery, possession of a deadly weapon during a felony, aggravated menacing and other crimes. He was being held in lieu of $60,750 secured bond.

Police did not report any injuries to the workers and shoppers at the store.
