Bethlehem bans cell phone use by drivers

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - May 20, 2010

The Bethlehem council voted 5-1 Wednesday night to allow police to pull over drivers using cell phones even if they have not broken any other traffic law. When the law goes into effect June 1, police will issue warnings for the first two months and begin fining motorists between $50 and $100 in August.

Officials in Allentown, Philadelphia, Erie, Harrisburg and Wilkes-Barre have approved similar bans over the past year despite legal questions about whether traffic laws must be uniform across the state. At least one driver has successfully challenged Harrisburg's law, and a Bucks County judge rejected a similar ban a decade ago.
