Dream comes true at Phillies/Cubs game

PHILADELPHIA - May 20, 2010

The thing is, he wasn't there to meet the Phillies!

Jesus Vargas Sanchez, of Reading, is a Cubs fan, having lived in the Windy City for 40 years and only moved to the area in March. He's in hospice care, and has never been to a baseball game.

So his granddaughter, Krystle Morales, got him tickets to see the Cubs play the Phillies in Philadelphia on Thursday.

"I think he didn't believe it at first! He was like, 'No, this is a joke," Morales said. "This means the world to him."

"It's a beautiful park, beautiful people," said Sanchez.

The folks at Diakon Hospice St. John arranged for Sanchez to be treated to a trip onto the field where he had a chat in Spanish with Cubs closer Carlos Marmol. Phillies broadcaster and former player Gary Matthews also stopped by.

Hospice chaplain Lynda Haring also happens to be Cubs fan.

"It just so happened that I had family members, acquaintances, in Chicago that could help put this together," she said.

Sanchez later watched the game from the stands and said that he loves watching all baseball, and really does like the Phillies.... just not when they're playing the Cubs!
