Woman lucky to be alive after SUV hits building

DEPTFORD, N.J. - May 21, 2010

It was around 8:30 a.m. when, police say, a 2004 Ford Explorer driven by 55-year-old Christopher Mach of Deptford was traveling on an access road at the Narraticon Apartments in the Aspen Hill section of Deptford Twp.

According to investigators, Mach's vehicle left the access road and struck the apartment building, crashing through the bedroom wall where the resident, 42-year-old Kelly Rahl, was in bed.

Rahl was not struck by the vehicle, but was trapped in her bed after being showered with wood, bricks and other debris.

Michele Benevento was in the apartment just above.

"I was in the shower and I just heard a big bang. I ran to the front room, I didn't see anything. I ran to the back and that's when I heard a guy out back say a car's inside the building," she said.

"I looked in the window and there was the lady inside the building in her bed. She was talking and they got her out," said maintenance worker Dominick Branda.

Rahl was initially treated and released from Cooper University Hospital, but was later re-admitted after suffering chest pains.

Police say several witnesses report the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the accident.

Deptford police have charged Mach with three misdemeanors: reckless driving, driving under the influence, and driving uninsured.

The good news is that in the midst of all this mess, maintenance man Ian Williams was able to locate Rahl's cat hiding in the rubble.

"Oh he was shaking like a leaf. He kind of just jumped into your arms, staying there. He didn't want to leave," Williams said.
